Looking for ways to keep the kids entertained this half term without spending a fortune? Hayling Island is full of free activities that are perfect for families. From beach adventures and playgrounds to bike rides, wildlife spotting and seaside exploring, there is plenty to keep little ones busy.
Here are some of the best free things to do with kids this half term on Hayling Island.
1. Visit the Hayling Island local parks
Hayling Island has some great playgrounds that are perfect for letting the kids burn off some energy. Mengham Park, West Town Park and the Legion Park all offer space to run, climb, swing and explore. Bring a football, scooter or even just a game of tag and you can easily spend a couple of hours here. Simple, free and always a win.
2. Enjoy a Hayling Island beach day
The beach is always a go-to and completely free. If you can find a sandy patch amongst the pebbles, it is perfect for building sandcastles and digging. Kids can paddle, hunt for shells, skim stones or just run along the shoreline. Add a picnic and a hot drink, and you have a full day out sorted.
3. Go crabbing at The Ship Inn, Langstone
Crabbing is a classic Hayling Island activity and one that kids never seem to tire of. Head to The Ship Inn car park area with a bucket, line and some bait, and see what you can catch. It is simple, hands-on fun that keeps them entertained for ages. Just remember to return your crabs safely once you are finished.
4. Bike, scoot or skate along Hayling Island seafront path
Park at Eastoke Corner and head onto the flat path that runs just back from the seafront, near the road. It is ideal for bikes, scooters, roller skates and little legs that need an easy route. You can keep it short or turn it into a longer ride depending on energy levels. There is also a lovely loop route where you can walk through the Sailing Club (foot access only), climb over the rocks and loop back along the seafront for a bit of adventure.
5. Visit the Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary is free to visit and a lovely, calm activity for younger children. Kids can see the donkeys up close and enjoy some time outdoors in a relaxed setting. Donations are welcome if you wish to support them, but it is not required. It is a great option when you want something a little slower-paced.
6. Go geocaching and create your own treasure hunt around Hayling Island
Geocaching is still very much a thing and a brilliant way to turn a walk into a real adventure. Download a free app and start searching for hidden “treasure” around Hayling Island. Kids love the excitement of finding each cache, and you can even bring along a small item of your own to swap and leave behind. Take a notebook and pen, create your own treasure maps and turn the whole day into a mini expedition.
7. Picnic and play at the old gunnery
For something a bit different, head to the old gunnery area for a picnic. There is plenty of open space for games, hills to roll down and lots of places for hide and seek. While it is not a sea view spot, it is peaceful, free to park and great for letting kids run wild. There are also paths to explore through the trees and bushes if they are feeling adventurous.
8. Paddle at The Ferry Boat (at high tide)
At high tide, the area near The Ferry Boat creates a sheltered pool that is perfect for paddling. It is a great spot for younger children to splash about in calmer water. Just make sure to stay within the sheltered area and be aware of the stronger currents outside of it. Always keep an eye on tide times before you go.
9. Explore the Hayling Island sandbanks when the tide goes out
When the tide goes out, large sandy areas appear that feel like a mini adventure zone. Kids can create puddles, dig, explore and look for small wildlife along the shore. It is a completely different experience depending on the tide, which makes it even more exciting. Just make sure to check tide times before heading out and plan your visit safely.
10. Visit the Hayling Island skate park on seafront
The skate park along the seafront is a great free spot for older kids. Bring a skateboard, scooter or roller skates and let them practise their skills. It is also a good place to meet others and build confidence. Even younger siblings often enjoy watching and cheering them on.
